How to use your watch as a compass...when the sky it's cloudy

Hi all, I'm sure many of yours are aware that a watch can be used as a compass
It's in fact just matter to point the hour hand to the sun: the line between the sun and the 12 on your watch it's (roughly) the South (note: vice versa, of course, on the South emisphere, the line it's North)
Anyway, there are days when the sky it's so cloudy, that's not possible to see the sun, like this
So, how about it? Well, there is a method that I learned via...the well knowed adventurer Bear Grylls and his show "Man vs Wild". You need a small wood's stick, your watch and your knife
Now, place the wood's stick in front to the blade of your knife, than rotate the blade slowly
See it? Note that in the positions 1 and 3, the stick don't make any shadow on the blade. Otherwise, in position 2, the shadow it's clearly visible on the blade: this means that the the blade it's just towards the sun. Now you know where the sun is, so you may point your hours hand watch to it and establish - roughly, but better than nothing - where the South is. Easy! Thanks to you, Bear! Ciao, Alfredo

The "M-Lemminkainen": a new project in collaboration with the skilled sami knifemaker (and good friend) Saku Honkilahti

Hi all, 6 months ago, me and the finnish knifemaker Saku Honkilahti worked on a project for a "survival tommi". The result was the knife named Lemminkainen, this one >b> Ciao!
The Lemminkainen on the field proved to be a great all-around knife. He is crearly a spin-off from the traditional finnish puukko, but me and Saku we worked a bit about the traditional shape for the Lemminkainen projet, adding a very small but effective ventral guard, a lanyard hole, a more robust tang and a 5,0 mm thick blade, a firesteel dedicated area on the blade spine. In few words, we wanted for a "survival puukko", and IMHO we meet our goal. >b>
>b> That said, me and Saku decided to work on a new project, called "M-Lemminkainen": we want for a shape and meauseres and features like the first versions, but the handle will be in micarta, and the furnitures will be in nickel-silver and the blade will be a hair more thick than 5,0mm. This should match even better that the first Lemminkainen the needs of a "survival" knife. >b> >b> I decided too to show you the "M-Lemminkainen" project growthing, step by step. I guess this should be of some interest. First of all, the blade: here you may see it immediately after quenching, just before tempering. As you can see, blade is partially hardened. The blade lenght is about 10cm, 21mm wide and little bit over 5mm thick.
E' lunga 100mm, alta 21mm e spessa poco più di 5,0mm >b> And here we are with the micarta block for the handle. We decided to use a green micarta, not only because is beautiful, but also to give a "camo" chance for the people who want it from his knife. If you want, instead, a very visible knife, a orange/yellow lanyard will solve your problem.
>b> Well, that's all at the moment. I will update this post bit by bit with the new pics and data of the growthing "M-Lemminkainen", as promised. Stay tuned!
Ok, here we are with the second step, the blade it's now ready, what do you think about? I feel it's a great bushcraft blade. See you soon for the third step!! Cheers, Alfredo
Hi all, finally the M-Lemminkainen it's completed. I'm more than happy with, and can't wait to try it on the field. My thanks goes to Saku Honkilahti, I'm sure our collaboration will continue in future!! Alfredo

Ciao a tutti!
Grazie! :-)
